Lakewood's Theater By The Sea Kicks Off 50th Season of High Steppin' Country

High Steppin’ Country, the longest-running live show on the Grand Strand, returns for its 50th season at Lakewood’s Theater By the Sea, the only outdoor, beachfront amphitheater on the Grand Strand. The 2026 milestone season kicks off on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, launching a summer full of music, energy and celebration, and acclaimed to be "the most memorable yet."

The high-energy, two-hour variety show features country favorites, gospel, patriotic medleys and a special throwback section celebrating iconic hits from the 1980s.

High Steppin' History

Since 1976, High Steppin’ Country has been a can’t-miss Lakewood tradition, and according to event organizers,

High Steppin’ Country was founded by the late Phillip Perry and continues today under the direction of his family, produced by his daughter Karla Mauldin and daughter-in-law Rhonda Perry. The show’s legacy of excellence has been shaped by incredible talent, including Emmy Award-winning choreographer Mallory Graham, who led the production for 33 years. Today, choreography is led by Phil’s granddaughter and former cast member, Abigail Perry, alongside musical director Kraig McBroom, who has been part of the show since 2009.

For 50 years, High Steppin’ Country has been a launching pad for young performers, including country music star Josh Turner.

Camping with Community Impact

Beyond providing memorable entertainment for visitors, High Steppin' Country is another example of the family-friendly experiences that help make the Grand Strand a multigenerational vacation destination. As a signature attraction at Lakewood Camping Resort, one of the region's most popular family campgrounds, the show enhances the visitor experience and encourages longer stays, repeat visitation and spending at local businesses.

Campgrounds play an important role in the area's tourism economy, offering affordable vacation options that attract families from across the country while supporting jobs and generating economic activity throughout the community. For five decades, High Steppin' Country has helped create the traditions and memories that keep families returning to the Grand Strand year after year.
