When the Carolina Opry opened in Myrtle Beach in 1986, 40 years ago, it ignited the beginning of Myrtle Beach's legacy as a world-class live entertainment destination. Today, the Grand Strand shines with talented singers, dancers, musicians, magicians and comedians performing live on stage under the bright lights of our beautiful theaters.
As we celebrate the opening of the Opry, we recognize how its founder, Calvin Gilmore, along with those who have transformed the theater over the years, have expanded the region's entertainment scene into the one-of-a-kind place it has become with world-class variety shows unlike anything you'll see anywhere else.
As residents, our hometown is home to over a dozen theaters offering unforgettable entertainment with the production value of Broadway, the glitz and glamour of Vegas, the energy of Branson, and the soul of Nashville all rolled into one. From music and magic to high-flying acrobatics and family-favorite dinner shows, we have the opportunity to experience world-class performances right in our backyard.
To celebrate this 40 years of entertainment, Visit Myrtle Beach is traveling through time to relive some of the theatre’s greatest moments and take an in-depth look at how it helped pave the way for the wealth of talent and live entertainment options we have today.
