Carolina Opry's 40th Anniversary Showcases Grand Strand's Live Entertainment Legacy

When the Carolina Opry first opened in Myrtle Beach in 1986, 40 years ago, it ignited the beginning of Myrtle Beach's legacy as a world-class live entertainment destination. Today, the Grand Strand shines with talented singers, dancers, musicians, magicians and comedians performing live on stage under the bright lights of our beautiful theaters.

As we celebrate the opening of the Opry, Visit Myrtle Beach is recognizing how the Opry and its founder, Calvin Gilmore, along with all those talented individuals of the local entertainment industry, have expanded the region into the one-of-a-kind place where world-class talent shines.

Through videos and online content, Visit Myrtle Beach is taking us back in time to relive some of the theatre’s greatest moments and take an in-depth look at how it helped pave the way for the wealth of talent and live entertainment options we have today.

Giving Back: Inspiring and Supporting the Grand Strand

These performances enhance our quality of life by bringing arts and culture into the community while also inspiring local youth to pursue their own passions in music, dance, theater and the performing arts. And, many of these theaters give back to the local community through charitable events, educational outreach, sustainability programs, youth performance opportunities and community partnerships that help strengthen and support the Grand Strand year-round.

One example of this community impact is the Chicora Rotary of Myrtle Beach's annual “Waves of the Future” program held at The Carolina Opry, which shines a spotlight on talented local students. The program gives young singers, dancers and musicians the opportunity to perform on a professional stage alongside experienced theater operators, helping build confidence, inspire creativity and encourage the next generation of performers right here in the Grand Strand. The annual event also raises funds for the Horry County School's Fine Arts Department.
