A Look Back At Can-Am Days History

Sun News, March 23, 1972
Many Canadians and Myrtle Beach natives have fond memories of Can-Am Days with activities that included Myrtle Beach-area cultural staples like chicken bog, country and beach music, and shag dances. The tradition began in 1961 to gain the attention of Canadian snowbirds seeking a warm weather retreat. The festival has been traditionally held during the spring break for Ontario schools in March, but deals and discounts were extended throughout the winter and early spring.
A look at newspaper archives showed that special Can-Am Day activities included parades down Ocean Boulevard, golf and mini-golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, business expos, music concerts and movie showings, band performances, square dance performances, social bridge, state park open houses, tours of the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and daytrips to nearby cities like Charleston.
Local radio stations would report local news and sports from Toronto.
